The Linden Tree:  Sculpture with Clay   Alyssa working on a head in gray clay. She is working on a head armature that consists of a board with a flange and a pipe screwed into it. The top of the pipe is wrapped with plastic bags formed into about the size and shape of a large light bulb. After she is finished making the sculpture, it will be carefully pulled off the pipe and the bags will be removed, leaving the inside hollow. This is necessary to prevent the sculpture cracking as it dries (and shrinks) and so it will fire evenly with much less chance of it exploding in the kiln due to trapped moisture. It also conserves clay.
